What is a Watershed?

A watershed is an area of land that feeds a stream, river, or bay with rainwater during a storm event.  Many also refer to a watershed as the drainage area or drainage basin.

Why is this Important?

Protecting a watershed means more than protecting the water.  What people do on the land has the potential to have a negative impact in the water.  Therefore, it is everyone's responsibility to reduce polluted runoff from various land uses.

The Alabama Coastal Foundation (ACF) has partnered with the Mobile Area Water and Sewer Service (MAWSS) to develop and implement a watershed management plan.

Serving as the primary drinking water source for the City of Mobile, MAWSS wants to make possible all opportunities for water quality management and protection. This project will provide strategies to encourage, sustain and improve environmental quality.

The success of this program rests solely on the participation of area residents. Without support from diverse backgrounds and constituents this program will not serve area needs.
